A century of New Zealand family photographs.

Looking over my collection of family photgraphs, postcards and press clippings  handed down by my parents, Sam and Connie Hughes, I am often puzzled as to the identity of  certain people and places.  This lead to the idea of posting the puzzles on the internet in the hope that relatives in New Zealand might provide some answers, eg. could this be from New Plymouth ?
My name is Warwick Hughes, I live in NSW southern Illawarra and was born in 1941 in Auckland. My email address is wshblog2013 at sign warwickhughes.com and I would welcome any comments, suggestions regarding  more material for this site, or descriptions for posted images.

In recent years two relatives, both born in 1918,  have provided me with extra photographs that I had never seen.  My mothers younger brother, Mr Trevor Edgerley started me on my interest in family history and in recent years I have shared some discoveries with Mrs Jean Smithson, my fathers youngest sister who has also given me many new photo's going back to 1900.

During the process of sorting and examining the collection I came to the view that some of the images portrayed glimpses of New Zealand  social history from the 1870's onwards and were not simply family snaps. There are migrants, settlers, some in "struggle street", participants in both World Wars, all reflecting the huge progress in New Zealand over a century.
I decided to arrange the images by decade in the best chronological order I could, in a few cases dates are mentioned where available.  So for example,  the link for 1910 takes you to a list for photographs I estimate to be from 1910 to 1919.
I have stopped at 1949 because the site is not intended  to be an up to date family album.

Readers who have scanned pictures know the process is a compromise between image quality and file size. I tend to prefer smaller file sizes for quick access on the net so if anyone wants a picture emailed it might be possible to give them a slightly better resolution image.  I may also have more up to date  information not put into captions.

Text file of approx. 40  surnames I know to be associated by birth or marriage with my family tree.
In the 1940's decade there are three class photos from Glen Eden School and there is a link to another file of pupils  names.  Feel free to offer additions or corrections.
