Major outbreak common sense in Canberra. ABC reported late yesterday – Australia to get nuclear-powered submarines, will scrap $90b program to build French-designed subs and this morning are running an update – Australia to acquire nuclear submarine fleet as part of historic deal with US and UK to counter China’s influence 16Sep2021
PM ScoMo is saying this is not a move to nuclear power and we will still honour the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. Australia needs to grow up but with an election due so soon nuc electricity generation would be a bridge too far for ScoMo. By now the ABC will be assembling a research team to use all these various issues against the Govt to help Labor win the 2021 Federal election. I have initial concerns we are nodding in two directions re the subs – I would prefer a more simple “just acquire tried & proven US nuc subs however and get them operating out of downunder”. And of course we should work towards acquiring nuclear weapons capacity.
9/11 20th at a time USA has self-harmed
After the monumental US fail exiting Kabul which will reverberate for years.
We now have this grim 20th Anniversary at a time every sane person knows the US has just greatly strengthened international terrorists who want to repeat 9/11 versions in various forms. I read where US football crowds have been chanting “F*** Joe Biden”. It has all been made easier for movie script-writers wanting to make movies about US/Western decline, weakness, defeat.
SEQWater wins 2011 Brisbane floods compo appeal
On 10Jan2011 I blogged “Toowoomba flash flood shambles” which covered the issues of Brisbane floods too.
Flood affected SE Qld people mounted a class action resulting in a court win. Reported earlier this year “Brisbane 2011 flood victims win $440 million in class action partial settlement over operation of Wivenhoe Dam” 26Feb2021. Now SEQWater have appealed and won according to ABC today. Queensland water utility wins appeal against 2011 flood damages ruling – 8Sep2021
I always thought it was unreasonable under all the circumstances to expect Wivenhoe Dam operators to be so all-seeing & wise as to release sufficient water in time so the dam could then hold back water from flooding homes downstream.
Winter 2021 BoM Outlooks all fail
Ivermectin news reveals PM ScoMo has noticed Clive Palmer
The ABC reports Regulator (TGA) warns Australians against using anti-parasitic medication Ivermectin to treat COVID-19 which is just days after Clive Palmer and MP Craig Kelly joined forces ~23Aug21 saying they will run United Australia Party candidates in all lower house Federal seats. The ABC also had a radio interview in June that they were told to correct.
I have been fortunate to mostly enjoy good health but over the decades you visit a Dr for odd reasons. Two observations of mine re medicos is that A they are often quick to jump to a conclusion not listening to what you say. And B Medical Dr’s – GP’s have been for decades recipients of amazing amounts of valuable gifts from drug companies.
Another view on Ivermectin from David Archibald – Links to Ivermectin articles and Unhinged on Ivermectin 29Aug21.
It amazes me that in all the enormous TV news time taken up by various Covid-19 daily announcements I have not heard a journalist ask if Ivermectin could be used to improve the health of people infected. It is unusual to hear about what drugs – if any are being used.
Waterbombers could have reduced Fraser Island fire
The ABC has uncovered docs showing Qld bureaucracies were reluctant to use available fire fighting aircraft to extinguish the Faser Island fire which burnt for ~60 days in Oct/Dec 2020 until rain put it out. Reading the ABC reprise backs my views that I am sure I have expressed over years – that often fire fighting authorities seem happy to have ground units “accompanying” fires – more than putting them out. Ditto when they use large waterbombers. It seems to me that often over years large waterbombers are tasked to dump retardant on unburnt bush, rather than extinguishing active fire. Those impressions of mine contribute to my belief that we would all be better off if the RAAF were tasked to run large waterbombers.
How could the West have arrived here?
AlJazeera reports Taliban enter Kabul. We know Joe Biden behaves as if he is afflicted with some form of dementia but surely people like Blinken and the Joint Chiefs are running still sane offices. Now we are in a situation where some armed guys in utes who follow a medieaval islamic cult could take westerners hostage civil or mil plus or minus airliners around Kabul airport. Memories of the Iran hostage crisis 444 days 1979-1981.
Nimbys up costs of electricity grid transmission
ABC reports Ballarat Labor MP Catherine King calls for rethink of Western Victoria Transmission Network Project – can only up power bill costs or increase transmission losses. More signs we are “flying blind” hoping unproven wind/solar/pumped hydro renewables will replace coal & gas in the quest to go emissions neutral by 2050 or 2030 or whenever.
Antipodean indigenous policy dangers
Interesting that both New Zealand & Australia face radical indigenous policy prescriptions being pushed by minorities.
For Australia we have the “Voice to Parliament” concept that the indigenous industry has been pushing for a few years and I see signs the PM could be ready to pass some version on a vote in Parliament. I can add more later on “Voice to Parliament”.
In NZ the recent emergence of the He Puapua (the break) concept looks exactly like a plan for the GreenLeft Ardern Govt to grant Maori a major and separate share of Govt way in excess of their ~17% of the NZ population.
NSW dams filling but water wasting to sea gold-plated iron-clad-certainty
ABC reports Dams are near capacity across New South Wales, with authorities monitoring flood risks and rain forecast – farmers are wanting water entitlements to grow summer crops. Bureaucracies have been anti-dams for yonks. The NSW Water Minister reflects this. I hope farmers get the water they need for summer crops. But my blog headline says what is the certainty.
