As our PM heads to Glasgow to worship at the “net zero by 2050” altar it comforts us to know that climate change and “our drying climate” is still controlling Perth region rainfall. Bickley which has one of the consistently reporting rain gauges – has just had 1,247mm rain to 21Oct and a quick eyeball at monthly numbers shows there is a fair chance the blog headline might come to pass.
The wettest Perth October on record according to Elders Weather is 96.4mm in 1999. With more rain on the way, it looks like Perth will record over 100mm this month. Those folks doing their bit for Earth Hour have brought home the bacon!
Perth Metro is smashing the October record you mention. An ~inch overnight and Oct total as I write is 116.8 – a few hours left today with a few spits around. Currently Bickley has broken the annual total record back to the 1,410.3 of 1996. Bickley sits on 1287.4 as of 9am today with a few hours of spits to add. And of course Nov and Dec still to work out.
BTW Perth Metro sits on an annual total to date of 834.4. So is shooting for an annual record going back to 1995 or 1996 – all in lap of “our drying climate”.

Fascinating Warwick. Bickley gets 1287mm but Perth Metro is only 771mm so far for the year.
It certainly feels like the wettest year I can remember here. But the rainfall data at Metro isn’t suggesting we will be more than average.

Hi Jo great to see you – You have to add October on to your Perth Metro number – 771 + 119.6 = 890.6 so far for year to 27Oct.
Note the ABC/BoM said nothing about “annual rain records”. You have to come for a little site like mine for that. Bickley is not the only Hills rain gauge shooting for an annual record back into the 1990’s – Dwellingup to is doing well with 1,313.4 for the year till 27Oct. Who knows what the full year will bring in terms of water falling free from the sky – “our drying climate”.
Has Jo checked CDO for the metro area. You may find that the tipping bucket wasn’t tipping for a fair bit of the winter. Happens a lot, happens here in Manjimup. The difference between the BOM site and AgWA more than 170mm YTD and they are only about 8km apart. Don’t trust the BOM data unless you have verified by checking daily data month by month.
Complete agreement TedM re checking the BoM numbers. I had a saying “check with a fine tooth comb”.
