Watching the meanderings inland of the weakening cyclone Trevor I see this BoM contoured rain map omits the massive 85.8mm of rain at Jervois – a lone weather station east of Alice Springs. This map shows negligible rain at Jervois for 1st to 25th March yet Jervois had 85.8mm on the 25th. Large map.
Statistics for Jervois show mean rain for March is 32.9mm so 85.8 is 2.6 times the mean.
Area without rain gauges in SE NT and SA four times the size of Belgium.
Where did you get the info about Jervois ? I been trying to follow the track of ex Cyclone Trevor to see how much rain is falling and see whether it is sufficient to break the drought there in the center..
But no BOM site has an any adequate information.
Sorry, Scrub that question. I see that the 85 mm for Jervois comes from BOM’s own rainfall records. So clearly the BOM’s chart makers are incompetent then !
Bill in Oz – if you want BoM station data then CDO is a gateway, use the map or try a place name or a station number if you know that.

If you want to see maps then choose “Maps – recent conditions” at
www.bom.gov.au/climate/maps/
there are many choices as you proceed.
Wazz. This seems to be another great unmeasured zone getting bigger. Marked on your map between the two big rain areas is Brunette Downs. This site seems to have stopped because there are no empty spaces for the rest of the month.

The was likely no gap in the rain between the two areas. No big switch turned off the cyclone.
East of Jervois looks to be a manual site “Marqua” 015559.
It has 172 mM against March 25. It may change the map in a few days if it needs to be typed in. Worth watching.
The Jervois error extends to the 26th so that is 176mm missed to date. Amazing how few stations are found current to 2019 as you move around the CDO map checking. The dying of our rain-gauges indeed.
For the more limited rain caused by cyclone Veronica in the Pilbara the rain maps seem to be in reasonable agreement with the rain maps.
Looking at the main stations in the area we saw the following gauge readings for the three days 24 to 26 March :
Port Hedland 179.4 39.4 136.8
Paraburdoo 0 0 0
Newman 1.2 0 0
Telfer 3.2 0.2 1.2
Karratha Aero 16.2 0 13.2
Map links.. 24-3-19 25-3-19 and 26-3-19
The gauge readings match the map contours reasonably well except for Karratha Aero (located near the base of the small spit to the west of Port Hedland) where the contours were very close spaced i.e. a wide variation in rainfall over a short distance. So BOM probably gets a pass on this one?
The massive reading of over 450mm for Roebourne during Cyclone Veronica finally got tossed out. The rain gauge had slipped below the floodwater!
Ahh, the Oz BoM.
An organisation of uncommon incompetence.
I’ve just been looking at maps for rainfall in February. According to the BOM the Adelaide Hills where I live, had between 10-25 mms. in February.
In fact we had zip, nada, nothing zero !
I think that some sections of BOM are just making it all up from day to day.
