I think the cyclone hit in April 1910 but our press reports are dated May and June. Can anybody find better confirmation of the death toll?
The UN has been saying “Cyclone Idai ‘might be southern hemisphere’s worst such disaster’ “
Please report any other comparable severe cyclones recorded in our old newspaper files.
The Mauritius cyclone on 7 June 1892 in part was reported thus, “thousands of dead and dying”. Hard to find a definitive number of deaths but it certainly appears to have been a catastrophic cyclone, perhaps like the Galveston 1900 cyclone the precise number of deaths is not known, estimates there range from 8000 to 16000?

Cyclone Leon–Eline in 1968 was quite a devastating event mainly for its longevity (29 days). Not sure if it was as destructive as Idai though a friend from Zimbabwe who was there at the time claims it was.
