Thanks to reader Bob – Farmers dismiss BoM rainfall outlooks as worthless – pity there seems to be no more Senate Estimates hearings this year Although they are mainly a GreenLeft Festival – and I am not aware of a Senator who will cross examine the BoM. I have Outlook critiques going back over a decade.
I thought I left a comment only a week or two ago about BOM’s failure in rainfall prediction. As well as i remember I said in the last week of September on the ABC program Landline BOM predicted a drier and hotter October than normal. On the chart shown of rain predictions SEQ was shown the chance of above normal rain was 20% which going by the tail of the distribution curve meant a fifty:fifty chance (peak of curve) in my area of about 60mm. In actual fact we had 376 mm about 62 mm under the all time (125 yr) record set in 1972. There were places in SEQld which had more rain. On TV there were some places eg Tewantin (near Noosa) which had 150mm in one day.
Farmers used to rely on BOM and watched Landline for the market information and the weather outlook. Landline seems to be starting to follow the ABC crap on climate and other political issues such as immigrants. Except for Kerry (?) the market chap the program is no longer worth watching.
