Labor abandons 50% by 2030 renewables target

There were signs from Perth a week ago – then the Illawarra Mercury had a crack at it – then on ABC TV The Drum Episode 15 last night host Ellen Fanning introduced her first segment with “and Labor’s backdown on its renewable energy target”. If anybody sees more on this huge story in the MSM please pass on links. Thanks to Lance for Youtube clip. 1. Sheesh the MSN are quiet about this Labor embarrassment. Waiting on GreenLeft central to wordsmith the position so it is more palatable to their constituencies. What a disaster for Labor and a huge win for the Govt after Turnbull’s attacks during Question time this week.

  2. I expect “RenewablesCentral” will be in hyper-indignation as they pound keyboards and phones will be redhot as they try to stiffen Labor resolve and emerge next week with a new meme. I saw a clip of Dr Hewson on The Drum last night bleating on about thermal solar and battery storage – neither of which has feasible grid scale proven engineering projects. Dr Hewson could tell us about the solar thermal pilot plants littering NSW. Silence there.

  3. I await further news with bated breath but have learned in this game never to count chickens the eggs (a) have been laid, (b) have hatched, and (c) at least six months have elapsed.

  4. The Left/Green’s war on fracking in Australia is, in large part, an effort to make renewables less uneconomic by driving up the price of gas.

There is enough shale gas to last Australia for decades at likely cheaper prices than current conventional supplies.

  5. Agree with K Rodgers above – ie. I don’t yet believe the ALP has changed its’ spots. As commented on an earlier thread, an “emissions intensity” regime, just a re-badged RET, is the next cynical ploy.

The ALP needs to keep the inner city seats out of Green hands. Plibersek in particular is very vulnerable to this.

  6. It’s long been a complaint of mine (about two decades long, in fact) that the MSM point blank refuses to give space to experienced power grid engineers. Still a valid complaint – all that is published is ignorant waffle and rhubarb from look-at-me skites like academic economists such as Ross garnaut or activist greenies. As a result, the gullible public is without any ability to decide the actual situation.

At Jo Nova’s website (joannenova.com.au/2017/02/weekend-unthreaded-152/#comments) today from comment #10 for a bit, several experienced electrical grid engineers discuss just this. If you want actual hard conceptual knowledge, numbers and facts, read it all.

Then perhaps my view as a Cassandra that we are stuffed will be better understood – although I do think most readers here already know this.
