Woolworths have always been followers, since Wesfarmers bought out Coles, which were the first to do 1dollar milk. They already owned Bunnings, bought out small service stations, and their deli shops for fuel discounts, Woolworths played catch up. This has cost them huge losses, like Masters, and are now being forced to recuperate lost funds in the best way they can.
Wesfarmers also own Office Works, KMart, Target, Landmark and CSBP fertilizers.
That gives them a big advantage for buying produce.
Do not agree with you Warwick. Governments should keep their hands out of business except for encouraging competition and diversification. Look at SA with their electricity (renewable energy targets and subsidies). If all electricity supply was open and fair their would be no solar and and wind. you have mentioned private water and hydro electric scheme for WA instead of the expensive desalination plant in Perth. Public servants only run business badly. Think of the Peter principle “people are promoted above their level of competence”. In private business if people mess up sufficiently they get sacked or the business goes bankrupt.
To make governments and senior public servants perform better direct democracy is required like Switzerland -frequent referenda and recall. Recall should apply to all politicians, judges, heads of departments, police commissioner etc. It should be perjury and jail for anyone to lie or mislead in the case for and against so the public can make the right decision.
I hope that WA makes the right decision in their upcoming election. It appears in the press at least there are many liers in the ALP who should be jailed for misleading the public.
I see the inconsistency in my position but I plead that “BigOil” is so powerful they can not be trusted in our puny market.
We do not even carry the minimum 90 day stocks that the IEA recommends.
I think there is a need for a Govt supported OzFuelsCorp here but there seems little support for that.
