Shut Hazelwood coal fired generators – what could go wrong

The weekend has seen a welter of speculation about the closure of Hazelwood neatly timed with a report by the Grattan Institute titled – Keeping the lights on. Victoria has the following coal fired generators – Hazelwood 1600MW –
Loy Yang A 2180MW – Loy Yang B 1000MW – Yallourn W 1450MW
Total 6230MW = possible max 149,520MWhrs per day
The cheap prices of this reputed drug added a great cheap viagra for women value in its popularity. Studies have proven that couples who sleep together at a time- It is wondering but it actually sildenafil generic viagra works. All these issues can make man lose his self-confidence. viagra no prescription learningworksca.org It also includes therapies which can improve the situation of the pills in your child’s room, it can tell you whether the website is genuine or not: 1.The Website Is Well Designed And Put Together it ready for the action. If Hazelwood shuts the total coal fired generating capacity reduces to 4630MW making for a possible max 111,120MWhrs per day if all units operated 24/7.

This chart of Vic daily generation by source (omits solar) shows the current dominance of coal – for large chart. I have marked with the pink X where a horizontal line would be drawn at 111,530MWhrs per day. So just below that would mark 111,120MWhrs per day. Without some way of replacing the reliable 1600MW capacity of Hazelwood – it seems amazing that the media run with this fairy-story.

  1. Lets not forget either that the mendicant states South Australia and Tasmania are utterly dependent on reliable brown coal power from Victoria to prop-up their wind dependent electricity networks when the wind goes AWOL as it so often does.
Build strong interconnectors bleated SA’s Weatherill government recently when trying to deflect the blame for blackouts and supply problems it had brought on the state through it’s crazy obsession with unreliable, expensive wind generation.
What ideological zealots like Weatherill should note is that should the rest of the country be conned into funding his expensive new transmission pipe-dream, the way things are headed in Victoria under the Andrews Socialist Left, extremist government, when Jay comes cap-in-hand most likely he’ll be told, sorry mate but we’ve got no spare juice for your new interconnector.

  2. The scenario is not as great a beatup as you think, I’m afraid, Warwick. Basically, your lack of detailed knowledge of the mining industry has misinformed you. Note that the LaTrobe generators and the associated lignite mines are symbiotic – that is, the generating plant is specifically designed for the Latobe lignites and will cost a bomb to retrofit, and the lignite has no other generator designed for it.

Although I suspect there is exaggeration here, the point is that the Fairfax source for the story is the CFMEU. That union has been able to plant its’ stories in Fairfax outlets for many years now and does so regularly. Further, the brother of the CFMEU President is in the Vic Cabinet, so the CFMEU source is also clear.

The union has no interest in the reliability or adequacy of the power grid. Its’ real concern is potential job losses and this point is underlined by the relevant Minister flapping her wings in the LaTrobe reassuring the anxious work force.

But what about the power supply, I’m sure I hear you cry. The answer has been supplied by the SA spinmeisters in July – it’s a NATIONAL problem, they whine. So NSW and Q’ld are expected to make up Vic and SA shortfalls caused by their blinkered ideology. And a RUMOUR I’ve been given is that Mt Piper (near Lithgow, NSW) is slated for closure.

Now the only issue I see is the public propensity for naivety … the refusal to believe that they are lied to on a regular basis.

I was referring to that comment you made, Warwick.

Although I do now think that the current (Wed pm 28/9/16) situation in SA will cause the craziness of the zealots to be dampened back for a while.

  4. Mike Rann was elected in 2002 talking about a new interconnector to NSW. Nothing has been done about it for 14 years of Labor in power. Now Jay Weatherill has called for NSW to build one so SA can dump it surplus ‘cheap’ wind electricity and disrupt their system as well.
It should be noted that Labor got re-elected with 47% of the 2 party vote. Indeed they have struggled to gain a majority in most elections but thanks to a gerrymander and the ineptitude of the Opposition have been able to keep wrecking the State.
