Also great to see them use the Fig 3 twin diagram ex NASA GISS – that I have been drawing attention to for years as absolutely vital.
Climate Conversation Group has a blog yesterday – Paper adds interesting perspective on NZ temperature trend
I wonder if people get it about that NASA diagram. NASA itself didn’t make full use of it.
What it shows is that statistical adjustments for inhomegeneities exaggerate warming.
The reason is that the adjustments remove the step-coolings that result from moving a station that is warming due to increasing heat and shelter around the measurement site. Increasing heat and shelter is the normal fate of weather stations as cities expand. The recorded warming, which is spurious from a climate point of view, is neutralised to some extent by step-coolings when the station is moved to a less-contaminated site. Take out those step-coolings and you end up with a record that has multiple spurious warmings as each sucessive site becomes more urbanised. You not only fail to eliminate the urban heat island effect, you get it two or three times over in a single locality’s record.
David, Yes its ironic but the raw temps from movings sites could be more accurate over the long term.
Dear Warwick
I’d love to comment, however no comments seem to be making it through. Hope all is well.
