Following on from my June 2012 post – Great Australian open borders experiment – come on down –
Well the great Australian no borders experiment is still running. The monsoon season dropped numbers in the summer but monthly numbers climbed sharply in March and could challenge the Nov 2012 record when April is complete.
Updated again 2 May using 3436 total for month to date from Michael Smith blog
Updated 28 Apr using 2899 total for month to date from Andrew Bolt blog
quoting a 27th Apr article in The Australian
I would not be surprised if at some point a radically larger ship is sourced – some cheap old freighter headed for the scrapyards might be cranked up and used to ferry a whole months arrivals on its last voyage.
Notes re numbers

When I get time I will work through Govt announcements and build my own totals again.
I blame global warming.
Andrew Bolt reports ABC news after the 2012 budget quoting Minister Bowen saying the Govt figured arrivals would run at 450 per month.
That number was blowing out as the ink dried on their budget papers and almost each month out Nov 2012 made a new record.
Now we have just experienced the highest Summer numbers. I wonder what the scale on your chart will extend to by years end; or by the Federal election campaign.
I have been checking our main media online sites to see if this huge April record is being reported. No sign of headlines that I have seen yet.
What will it take ?
Andrew Bolt is reporting that numbers have clicked over the 1,000 per week mark for the first time.
I see Chris Kenny in The Australian reporting that for the first 9 days of May IEV arrivals are running at 190 per day. If that keeps up it could mean near 5,800 for the month.
Thanks to the ABC – Can either side of politics stop the asylum boats? – By James Glenday – 13 May 2013
This is an interesting map by the UN – although I think there is a fair bit of imagination in it. I would like to see it represented how many fly into Indonesia – then are waved through to catch a boat from there.
Amazing that our own Govt does not publish more information. So 25% of the flow is young Iranian men who then presumably use family reunion provisions to bring in ? how many more. Looks like an invasion sanctioned by Iran to me. I tend to agree with the ABC commenters who say we should just scrap the UN treaty. The UN is just like an over-arching failed state anyway, zero loss to our national interest.
