This pioneering weather map from the Sydney Morning Herald 5Feb1877 has a list of 33 towns and locations in New South Wales where daily weather observations, rainfall, max & min temperature, barometric pressure etc were being recorded. 34 if you count Sydney Observatory Hill.
For many years I have been puzzled at the deterioration in BoM rainfall data more recent than about 1995 and this list of heritage NSW weather stations is a useful source to test my 2008 claim on a group of significant BoM stations choosen by somebody else. For each location name I have searched CDO for monthly
rainfall data from ~1870’s and for sites that closed decades ago to fill gaps. I have added a site or sites till I got data ~current to 2019. I have not cut and pasted every location into a spreadsheet to test for every missing year – that can wait until I have more time.
My spreadsheet records 64 stations used to build a full record for each of the 34 locations – many could be improved by adding data from the closest Airport AWS which might be further away and as I said in the above sentence there may be a few where missing years I have not eyeballed need hunting down from neighbours.

Drought in MDB worse in the past
Drought and the Govts response is red-hot in the news lately and many claims are made re “worst drought ever”.
BoM data is from their “Australian climate variability & change – Time series graphs” page.
My chart indicates the Federation Drought was clearly worse in the Murray Darling Basin than the current event.
It is also clear that there were dryer or similar anomalies circa the start of WWI, circa 1920, a twinned event in the late 1920’s, during WWII there were few periods of over average rain, a twinned event in mid 1960’s, a sharp event in 1983, 2002-03 stands out clear. Our news and public discourse is swamped with fake news and rubbish. If anybody wants the data just ask and I can email so readers can make their own charts or whatever. BoM using “Beehive” thermometer shield in CDO
Reader Siliggy emailed this evidence of changes quietly inserted into the BoM network – that is proving “climate change and global warming”. Is there a study comparing this Beehive to stevenson screens?

BoM rain map massive errors
Watching the meanderings inland of the weakening cyclone Trevor I see this BoM contoured rain map omits the massive 85.8mm of rain at Jervois – a lone weather station east of Alice Springs. This map shows negligible rain at Jervois for 1st to 25th March yet Jervois had 85.8mm on the 25th. Large map. 
Statistics for Jervois show mean rain for March is 32.9mm so 85.8 is 2.6 times the mean.
Area without rain gauges in SE NT and SA four times the size of Belgium.
Faulty BoM data adds to Australian hot summer

It looks clear that BoM can not get central Australian temperatures sufficiently “congruent” in their database.
Queensland Premier claims 7 or 8 years of drought
I heard Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on ABC TV news 7th or 8th Feb claiming “after 7 or 8 years of drought” in the context of talking about cattle deaths in floods around the Mt Isa – Hughenden region. This got me to looking at BoM drought maps and maps of recent rain to see exactly where Qld drought has been from 2011 to 2018. Here are two 4 year Qld drought maps showing the Premiers entire 8 year period. 
How does the Premier get to be so detached from the facts of BoM maps?
I have a separate www page with relevant BoM maps of Australia for easy comparison of drought areas for each of those those 8 years. It was a bit of a shock to find that for year 1 – 2011 there was no drought anywhere in Australia. Then for year 2 – 2012 there was almost no drought in Qld. Then in 2013 there were sizeable drought areas in our subject area affected by recent floods. In no subsequent year were there any significant drought areas in our subject area. Let me know what you think of the Premier’s statement. I know the Townsville floods and cattle death floods to the west have stressed all involved. However we surely can not lose our grip on measurable factual data to this extent.
