All three Australian BoM May 2020 Climate Outlooks turned out to be useless – hopelessly wrong – obviously the “BoM hot-shot weather & climate Honchos” had not a clue about what was coming down the Australian region weather/climate pipeline for May 2020.
May rain Outlook prediction – note predicted wet southern WA turned out dry – note how predicted dry tropics turned out so exactly wet. Gotta love that BoM.
May Max temperature Outlook prediction – note predicted cool southern WA turned out the national patch of warm days – note the predicted HOT tropics turned out cool. Utterly uselss BoM did not have a clue.
May Min temperature Outlook prediction – Yikes scorching hot nights predicted near everywhere by the omnipotent BoM but reality tells of anomalously cold nights mostly everywhere.
Yet this last week BoM people will have been pontificating wisely at the laughable Royal Commission on the fires – I bet not a peep from anybody about this recent embarrassing BoM disaster.

Long-term Climate Variability in Australia
I discovered this historic BoM (1999) flyer while searching for a hard copy of a 1992 paper on the 1970’s Pacific Climate Shift. Read how the BoM attributes – El Nino – thousands of years of ice ages and warm periods – solar cycles – volcanic eruptions – oceans and currents – sea-ice extent – greenhouse and on the back page urbanisation and land use changes get a nod. Page one – two – three – four.
I found on my HDD this front page of Kerr R.A. 1992. Unmasking a shifty climate system. Science 255: 1508–1510. – if anybody has a pdf please pass on. Three of the time-series charts in BoM 1999 – temperature – rainfall and cloud cover all show evidence of a shift in the 1970’s.
I sourced updated data for the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) from NOAA and made this monthly PDO chart 1854 to current. Positive periods tend to be dry and negative wet.
We should recall the Qld DPI very useful rainfall maps that I blogged on in March 2018. They have more versions now.
BoM 1 in 100 yr Gold Coast rain exceeded 7 yrs ago
The ABC reports the BoM today “Flash flooding on Gold Coast and Brisbane sparks calls for help as storms sweep Queensland“.
BoM says, “…in some locations it was a one-in-100-year event.”
Here is BoM Qld rain totals map for today 18Jan2020 – contours for peak rain are 200-300mm.
Here is BoM Qld rain totals map for 28Jan2013 near tail end Cyclone Oswald 7 years ago – contours for peak rain are +400mm.

Secret data “BoM Australia-wide av daily max t time series”
This week BoM announced that on Tuesday 17th their Australia-wide av daily max hit a record 40.9 breaking 40.3 from Jan 2013. Then on the 18th we reached 41.9. Does anybody know where this Australia-wide average daily max time series daily data can be downloaded? JoNova blogged yesterday on the subject of our history of high temperatures and how BoM seem little interested. Like Jo I suspect that BoM gridded AWAP maps could be the source of the Australia-wide average daily max headlines but I have not found where to download the time series – hoping readers can help.

BoM claim Perth record Nov heat not so robust
The ABC reports Perth endures hottest November day since records began as Western Australia sizzles in the heat. BoM says – “…40.4 degrees on Saturday — the hottest November day since records began in 1897.” What a pack of rubbish!!
Perth has seen hotter days including 40.7 at Bentley Curtin 009161 on 22Nov1978.
BoM changing temperature extremes history
Lance Pidgeon has been working on these 2002 Tables of daily temperature extremes for each Australian State & Territory from the ABS and I decided to show his findings re daily max in this Table. Minimums later.
Readers can check for themselves the BoM sources we used which I have colour coded in my Table.
Red is for what the ABS shows.
Blue shows information from the BoM CDO Climate Data Online.
Pink shows information from the BoM Climate statistics for Australian locations. Change the site number in the URL.
Green shows information from the BoM Daily Extremes Table (select your State and choose Annual which is the bottom Table)
The BoM have since 2011 produced the ACORN adjusted dataset of daily max & min temperatures for their selected sites across Australia and any historic daily max or min from CDO can be altered hotter or colder by ACORN including record extreme hot days. There is now ACORN Version 1 and 2. Generally ACORN adjusts the early part of the 20th Century cooler and more recent data warmer – thus increasing a warming trend in Australian data.
Below are examples of ACORN changes to from the ABS Tables for Oodnadatta and Canberra.
Table showing changes to Oodnadatta; ACORNv1 made no changes but ACORNv2 this year increased the all time Australian hot day record on 2 Jan 1960 from 50.7 to 51.1.
Canberra – ACORNv1 starts at March 1939 so excludes the ACTON record of 42.8 on 11 Jan 1939 but ACORNv2 has rediscovered ACTON and cools the 42.8 to 42.2. 1939 Acton Table. Note further down the Acton table some large cooling changes of -2.3 degrees. Our pioneers sure had bad eyesight.
The old Canberra Airport 70014 saw a hottest day of 42.2 on 1 Feb 1968 which ACORNv1 increased to 42.4 and ACORNv2 snipped that back to 42.3. Fiddle, faddle, stroke & tweak thats the BoM playing with ACORN.
Extreme minimum records by the ABS 2002 see links above. Continue reading BoM changing temperature extremes history
BoM relocates Birdsville to NSW
Noticed this while working on extreme max T readings that have been vanished by the BoM.
The Annual extremes table for NSW has Birdsville Airport in the list – see my screen saved. How can we believe the BoM and all the blah blah on “climate change” and “extreme weather” when they can stuff up such a simple thing as this and fail to notice the error themselves.
